As your wedding day draws closer, it’s only natural to have some concerns about the future with your intended. You hope you live a long and happy life together, but want to protect yourself in the event that something goes wrong.
One of the best forms of financial protection is a prenuptial agreement. Although there are many benefits for both spouses when signing a prenuptial agreement, asking your soon to be spouse for a prenuptial agreement is easier said than done.
If the time comes to have this conversation, here are a few tips you need to follow:
- Give yourself enough time to get everything in order, as it may take more than one conversation to fully explore the issue
- Decide on the terms together, as this ensures that both individuals are comfortable with the agreement
- Be open and honest about why you want a prenuptial agreement, including what you hope to get out of this legal document
- Listen to the other person’s concerns, as you don’t want him or her to feel forced into anything
- Take a breather if you realize that things are getting heated
Being patient, persistent and practical make it easier to ask for a prenuptial agreement.
If you find yourself ready to take on this conversation, don’t hesitate another day. From there, once you and your fiance are on the same page, you can work to create protections for both of you during marriage. Then you can tie the knot with a sense of calm and certainty. Both of you will know what is expected from the marriage and what will happen if it eventually ends.
