When asking for a prenuptial agreement, listen as well

Once you get engaged, you may soon begin to think about the best time to ask your fiancé if he or she will entertain the idea of signing a prenuptial agreement.

This can be a difficult conversation on many levels, so you need to tread softly as to avoid a serious argument.

When asking for a prenuptial agreement, you don't want to come across as someone who is issuing demands. Instead, you need to be clear and straightforward, all the while listening to the other person's thoughts.

Here are some listening tips that are sure to work in your favor:

  • Do your best to understand where the other person stands, even if you don't agree with his or her positioning
  • Ask questions along the way, as this is the best way to understand what your partner is thinking
  • Put yourself in the other person's shoes
  • Allow your partner to finish his or her thoughts before jumping in
  • Keep a level head, as getting upset will detract from the conversation

Along with the above, you should never hesitate to step away if necessary. For example, if your discussion is going down the wrong path, put it on hold and agree to revisit it in a few days.

Asking for a prenuptial agreement is a big deal, so you don't want to make any mistakes along the way. You need to be open and honest with your partner, all the while letting him or her know that you're open to discussing each and every detail. If you take this approach, while also understanding how to create a prenuptial agreement, you'll end up in a better place.
