Going through a divorce is challenging on many fronts. At first, you need to wrap your head around the idea that your life is going to change in many ways. For example, you will no longer be living in the same home as your spouse.
Soon enough, you’ll turn your attention to matters of property division. While you have every intention of “getting your fair share,” you can rest assured that your soon-to-be ex-spouse will have the same mindset.
While there are many assets to consider during property division, personal property items will quickly come to mind. These can include but are not necessarily limited to:
- Home furnishings
- Artwork, antiques and other collectibles
- China and crystal
- Computers, televisions, and other types of electronics
- Home office equipment
- Guns
- Clothing
- All types of motor vehicles, such as cars, boats, ATVs and recreational vehicles
Since there’s a good chance that you have a lot of personal property in your home, you need to make a checklist of what will come into play during your divorce. If you don’t do this, you could end up forgetting about something that you’re entitled to.
With a personal property checklist by your side, nothing will slip through the cracks. Instead, you’ll know exactly what you need to discuss during mediation (or litigation, if it comes to that).
There are many aspects of the divorce process, but you always want to leave enough time to focus on property division. You aren’t going to get everything from your marriage, but you should know what it takes to fight for equitable division.
